1. Location

a. Preexisting flag stations are established at most racetracks. However, the locations of these stations are usually designated with automobile racing in mind and may not be suitable for motorcycle racing.

b. A flag station needs to be located up-track from the entrance to the turn, on the opposite side of the impact zone. (See Diagram A, Flag station location.) The corner worker needs an unobstructed view of the entrance, apex and exit of the turn.

c. The corner station should provide a clear line of sight to the adjacent up-track and down-track corner stations.

d. The position of the flag person should not be relocated during the race or practice session unless instructed to do so by a race official.

D. Corner station check list

1. Please check the following items and report any discrepancy to Race Control as soon as possible.

a. Establishing the flagger=s location. Note: Once the flag station has been established do not relocate during the event. The red flag shall remain with the radio person.

1. A properly charged fire extinguisher.

2. Operational communications equipment.

3. Oil dry and a broom.

4. Yellow flag.

5. Debris flag.

6. Ambulance flag.

7. Red flag.

8. Inspect the course for cracking or broken pavement.

9. Inspect the course for debris: oil, mud, water, ice, gravel, sand, rubber, tire or other parts.

10. Review emergency procedures: who, what, where and how.

11. Review hand signals and their meaning with other workers. (See Diagram B, Hand signal for ambulance, and Diagram C, Hand signal for fire).

12. Review the proper operation of the fire extinguisher with all workers assigned to the station.

13. Review fuel/ignition shutoff procedures.

E. Fire extinguisher

1. Check the gauge on the extinguisher to verify it is fully charged. Check the safety pin to ensure it is properly installed.

2. Position the extinguisher in a convenient location (easily accessible).

3. When use of the fire extinguisher is required, carefully approach the fire from an upwind direction. Grasp the extinguisher by the handle, remove the safety pin by firmly pulling it away from the socket Keep the extinguisher upright and squeeze the handle while directing the spray at the base of the flames. Some fire extinguishers may have a short flexible hose and feed-horn or nozzle to aid in directing the flame suppressant at the base of the fire. Apply several short bursts, step back to observe and determine if additional application is necessary.

4. Retain the safety pin for future use.
