Many people wonder just how fast they are going on any track at some particular point in time. We would like to thank Jim Dominique from Prairie Village, Kan., for the loan of his radar gun, for that loan enabled us to find out at Daytona. Also, thanks to Ken Mertz, who trained diligently in its use, and Keiko Richert, who aided Ken in the writing of the numbers. Without these, the following report would be nothing but imaginative speculation.
The speeds were shot at the finish line on the tri-oval, and riders were chosen by convenience. If the speed listed for you seems wrong, it isn’t! The speed gun was calibrated before we started. It just seemed like you were going faster. Also, the wind conditions varied considerably (an excuse you are authorized to use). The lap you were timed on may not have been your best. It may have been in the first laps before your tires were warmed up. Maybe you weren’t drafting at that time, causing the loss of a few mph at the gun. Try this one: The gun’s microwaves caused your ignition to cut out.
Whatever the reason or excuse, the following numbers are the speeds we came up with under the conditions of the moment. Those of you who would like a certificate stating your speed achievements at Daytona International Speedway may get one by mailing or faxing a request for same, along with a $10 donation to the AHRMA Benevolent Fund, to the AHRMA office in Wausau.
