Royal Enfield Bullet

Submitted by Phil Myers

We are having a rather good season, with wins at several tracks and a small following of Enfield enthusiasts showing up all across the nation to see us run. It should be said that part of our success is from the lack of participation from most of the "fast guys" on those astounding Manx Nortons and G50 Matchlesses, but there is no denying the fact that you must show up at each event and finish to win championships.

I think it would be appropriate to tell you a little about Dan Holmes, the bike's owner and team founder. Dan's background is in flat track racing in the mid to late '70s. That is where his heart is, but his health does not permit him to race any more. Rider Johnny Szoldrak lives nearby in Warsaw, Ind., with loads of roadracing experience and desire.

In late summer 2001 we teamed up and built a Classic '60s class racer using a "new" 1996 Indian-manufactured Enfield. Dan owns an Enfield dealership, DRS Cycle, here in Goshen, Ind., and is the nation's number-one dealer and parts outlet for the marque. He also strongly supports his customers with many, many hours on the phone, educating and assisting each person who asks. His quality personal relationships with people from all over the world centering around Enfields is second to none. I am his close friend and I keep the Bullet racer prepped and running at the races. He calls me his "tuner," but really I am just an old racing mechanic/machinist who thoroughly enjoys participating.
