Roebling Road Raceway

The big news is that the Daytona warm-up race is back at Roebling Road Raceway (above). A practice day will be offered on Wednesday, Feb. 28, with the first round of the 2007 Historic Cup Series on Thursday, March 1. For those who have never been there, Roebling is a nine-turn, 2.02-mile-long road course just outside Savannah, Ga. Visit the track website below for more information about the facility.

Roebling schedule:

  • Tuesday, Feb. 27 — Gates open 5-10 p.m. Camping permitted.
  • Wednesday, Feb. 28  — Gates open, 7 a.m. Registration & tech open, 7:15. Practice begins, 9 a.m., with lunch break from 12-1 p.m.
  • Thursday, March 1  — Gates open, 7 a.m. Registration & tech open, 7:15. Registration closes, 8:30. Practice begins, 9. Racing starts, 11.

The 2006 Roadrace Awards Banquet takes place Saturday, March 3, at the Holiday Inn in DeLand, Fla. A ticket order form was included in the January issue of Vintage Views and can be downloaded below.

Auctioneer Jerry Wood will emcee the Roadrace Awards Banquet, which this year includes a live auction and appearances by many of the Great Men. You may be lucky enough to walk away with a Cromwell helmet, donated by AHRMA’s own Bob Barker, or some other interesting bit of moto memorabilia. The evening gets started with live country music performed by Will Harding and his band at 5:30 p.m.; the dinner, auction and awards follow. Do you have something to donate? Contact Will Harding at 352-378-2540 to arrange a donation.

Then it's back to the Volusia County Fairgrounds on Sunday, March 4, for Daytona registration and tech inspection day. Schedule:

  • Gates open at 7 a.m.
  • Registration and tech open 8 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m.
  • Mandatory riders' meetings at 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Town Hall meeting, 12 p.m.

Roebling pre-entry list

Roebling practice schedule and race order

AHRMA moves to Daytona International Speedway on Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6. Note that the current "AMA" track layout will be used. Tentative plans were to run the old, 3.56-mile configuration, but logistics involving CCS racing and air fences will prevent this from happening in 2007. There is a chance the old layout might be used in '08.

Daytona schedule:

  • Sunday, March 4 — Speedway move-in about 4 p.m., through Gate 40 (new tunnel; details at the fairgrounds riders' meeting).
  • Monday & Tuesday, March 5 & 6 — Paddock opens, 6:30 a.m. Practice, 8-11 a.m. Racing begins, noon. Awards presentation (Monday only), 5 p.m. Everyone must leave paddock by 6 p.m. both days. All rigs, no matter what size, come and go through Gate 40.

If you are a CCS competitor who plans to race the AHRMA Daytona event, please click here for an information sheet.

Want a full-access paddock pass for AHRMA's Daytona roadraces and avoid waiting in the ticket line at the speedway? All you need to do is head over to the Volusia County Fairgrounds on Sunday the 4th for AHRMA's Daytona registration and tech day. The cost of the pass is $60 per person, and it's good for both days — Monday and Tuesday, March 5 and 6.

See the Bike Week bits and pieces section below for more about what's going on at Daytona.

Remember, pre-entries for Daytona and Roebling are due Friday, Feb. 2.

Honoring handshifters...

AHRMA will honor handshift motorcycles at Daytona ‘07. About 20 Australian handshift machines are expected to attend, and there will be a parade of bikes and national flags during the lunch break on Monday. Overseas riders are encouraged to bring along their nation's flag.

If you have a handshift motorcycle and would like to participate in the parade, the cost is $60 for the two-day AHRMA Daytona credential, which gives full access to the speedway for both days of AHRMA racing. Motorcycles will undergo a brief tech check for leaking fluids, and riders must wear safety gear (helmet, jacket, long pants, boots and gloves).

Click here to download an entry form (pdf format). You must pick up your credential either on Sunday, March 4, during tech and registration day at the Volusia County Fairgrounds or from 6-9 a.m. on Monday the 5th at the new tunnel entrance to the speedway of International Speedway Boulevard.

...Vintage Battle of the Twins...

On Tuesday, March 5, the men and machines that ushered in the era of twins racing will be honored with parade laps at the lunch break. Reno Leoni, Malcome Tunstall and Will Harding already have committed to participate, and AHRMA is looking for other riders and machines that raced BOTT in the 1980s to early '90s. Modern machines have progressed to the point where these early two-cylinder racers already could be considered "vintage" when compared to the motorcycles in AHRMA's Battle of Twins and Sound of Thunder classes.

If interested in participating, please use the form above in the handshifters section, and note the times for picking up credentials.

...and Great Men too

After a year's hiatus, the Great Men program is back, sponsored by Top Oil, Motion Pro and A&A. Dick Mann and other racing legends will be available for autographs, photos and bench racing during the March 3 registration and tech day at Volusia County Fairgrounds, plus the following two days at Daytona International Speedway. Check back for more names and times.

Off-road events at Hardrock

That's Hardrock Cycle Park in Ocala, Fla., a place AHRMA last visited during Bike Week 2000. Plans were in place to return to Gatorback Cycle Park, but on Jan. 10 the track management called to say that AHRMA would not be able to use the facility for 2007. Fortunately, Hardrock was available, so we will be moving all our off-road events there, using the previously announced schedule.

Hardrock is about 40 miles south of Gatorback, with easy access from I-75. The 100-acre facility has several different motocross tracks and an extensive network of trails. Like Gatorback, it's a former limestone quarry, so you'll find more than the normal amount of elevation change offered in central Florida.

Now, if you were here before with AHRMA — or have heard stories from someone who was — the name that might come to mind is "Hard-as-a-rock." Well, that was then, and it's true that some turns of the motocross track developed a blue groove not unlike a dirt track. Now, however, things are very different. Over the past three years, the new owners have made many improvements, including constructing additional MX tracks with different surfaces and different layouts. Alex Moroz, AHRMA's eastern off-road coordinator, is working closely with Southeast Region vintage racers and track management to make sure that vintage and post-vintage racers both will enjoy courses that are entirely appropriate to the types of machines they are riding. Trials and cross country riders will find that Hardrock is an excellent venue for them as well. Give it a try!

The gate fee is $25 for three days, $20 for two days or $10 for one day. Primitive camping (no hookups) is $10 per day. There are indoor restrooms with showers, a parts and accessories shop, and food available.

AHRMA's newest national sponsor, backing the vintage motocross series, is Legends of MX, a group that will be honoring a different legend of the sport at each round of the series. England's Dave Bickers will the first of the Legends, taking part at Ocala.

Here's the schedule:

Friday, March 2, cross country (separate races for vintage and post-vintage), followed by observed trials. Contrary to what was previously announced, there will be no fee charged for transponders for cross country racers. The route will wind through pine woods, fields and various limestone quarry lakes.
  • CC sign-up, 7:30 a.m. Sighting lap, 8:30. Vintage race, 9. PV race, 11.
  • Trials sign-up, 10 a.m. Start, 1 p.m.

On Friday evening, March 2, the 2006 Off-Road Awards Banquet takes place at the recently renovated Ocala Quality Inn. Come and celebrate the achievements of your fellow competitors. Special guest will be Todd Huffmann, producer of The Motocross Files TV show. A ticket order form is found in the January issue of Vintage Views and can be downloaded below. The festivities start at 7. A silent auction fundraiser is planned; vendors/donors call Alex, 315 415 6486. (Note: Parking is limited at the Quality Inn. Please leave trailers and big rigs parked at Hardrock Cycle Park and carpool where possible.)

Saturday, March 3, vintage motocross. Note that the days for the vintage and post-vintage MX have been swapped this year.

  • VMX sign-up, 7 a.m. Practice, 9. Racing, 10.
  • Town Hall meeting, approximately 4 p.m., after racing concludes.

Sunday, March 4, post-vintage MX.

  • PVMX sign-up, 7 a.m. Practice, 9. Racing, 10.

The facility will be open for riding, so come early and get some time in on Hardrock's various tracks and trails. The main track will not be open for riding, as it will be prepped for the AHRMA nationals. A non-AHRMA modern trials will be held Saturday and Sunday for anyone interested in a little more feet-up action that weekend. Info: Barry Florin, 321-815-0586.
